1. Professor
Vincent Olusegun Sowemimo Olunloyo is the Coordinating Consultant/
Professor in the School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing
Engineering of the Akwa-Ibom State University of Technology (AKUTECH),
having just completed a six-year term as Head of the Department of
Systems Engineering, University of Lagos, a position he has occupied
since 2000. He holds the degrees of B. Sc in Mechanical Engineering and
Ph. D in Fluid Mechanics, both from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York,
USA, obtained in 1967 and 1972, respectively. Following the completion of
his doctoral programme, Professor Olunloyo served as a Post-Doctoral
Fellow/Assistant Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in the
Graduate School of that University during the period 1972-1973.
2.
Professor Olunloyo, who was later to hold the Nigerian National
Order of Merit (NNOM), which was awarded in 1998 for his work in the
areas of Water Resources and Aerospace Science, continued his
administrative, teaching and research career as an academic in the
University of Lagos when he was appointed, in 1973, as Lecturer Grade 1
in Engineering Analysis. He moved steadily through the positions of
Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor from 1974 – 1978 and was
appointed Professor of Engineering Analysis in 1979. He has been a
Professor in the Faculty of Engineering for over 26 years. He was the
Head of the Engineering Analysis Unit in the Faculty of Engineering of
the University during the periods 1980 -1981 and 1996 – 1999, as well as
the Dean of Engineering from 1981 – 1983. He was also the Professor/Head
of Mechanical Engineering and the Foundation Dean of Engineering of the
newly established University of Ilorin from 1978 – 1980, while on leave
of absence from the University of Lagos.
3.
Professor Olunloyo’s teaching and research interests span wide areas of
Engineering Analysis/Systems Engineering in which he has been active in
the University of Lagos for over thirty years. Specifically, he is
credited with major research contributions through substantial
publications in diverse fields. These fields include Mechanical
Engineering (in areas such as, in particular, Fluid Mechanics, Mechanics
of Materials and Mechanical Vibrations); Software Engineering/Systems
Engineering; Engineering Manufacturing and Production; Space Technology
and Applications; as well as policy issues in the Development of
Engineering. His current research interests are in:
-
Offshore Engineering Mechanics and Technology in Hydrocarbon
Exploration;
-
Environmental Fluid Mechanics; and
-
Artificial Intelligence and Systems Engineering (with
specializations in Robotics, Expert Systems and Neuro-Fuzzy
Networks).
4.
As a Professional Engineer, Professor Olunloyo is registered as No.
R0714 by COREN (the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in
Nigeria). Uniquely, this registration covers the three fields of
Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and Systems Engineering. He
is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (FAS), Fellow of the
Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) and the Foundation Fellow of the
Nigerian Academy of Engineering (FAEng.). An Active contributor to the
development of Science and the Engineering Profession in Nigeria,
Professor Olunloyo has served as a member of the National Executive
Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and a member of the
Board of COREN. He is the foundation and incumbent Chairman of the
Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the National Space Research and
Development Agency (NASRDA) and on several occasions has served on the
Council of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He is also the current
President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.
5.
Professor Olunloyo’s interest and achievements spread beyond the
traditional boundaries of engineering; he is the only Nigerian Fellow of
the National Mathematical Center, Abuja (FNMC) in service and was just
recently bestowed (2006) a merit award for excellence by the Nigeria
Institute of Physics (NIP). He serves on the Pipeline and Riser
Scientific Committee of the OMAE 2007. He is Regional Editor (Africa) for
The International Journal for Service Learning in Engineering
6.
Professor Olunloyo has been continuously engaged, since 1978, as a
principal consultant in Engineering and Technology-based consultancy
projects for various organisations within the public and private sectors
of the national economy, as well as for international agencies. These
have been mainly in the areas of Water Resources, Systems Engineering and
Information technology. Within the field of Water Resources, the projects
he had undertaken during the period1978 – 1990 included his pioneering
effort in the development and establishment of the Nigerian Water Data
bank, geophysical investigations for the siting and operation of
productive boreholes, and the monitoring and management of water
resources facilities. These projects were developed and executed for the
Federal Ministry of Water resources and attracted funding at the level of
about N7 Billion and US$1.7 Million.
7. Projects
on Systems Engineering and Information Technology, most of which
commenced in 1988, include those on Assets Management for the Presidency
and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Computerization and Modernization
Services for the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, and the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), at a total cost of over N20
Billion. In addition, Professor Olunloyo was, from 1992 and until
recently, the Federal Government Consultant on the National Identity Card
Programme of the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, a project which
has attracted funding in excess of N17.3 Billion and US$330 Million.
8. Given his background as presented above, as well as his academic and
professional inclinations, Prof Olunloyo’s interest are currently focused
on the design of the curriculum and the development of the R&D-driven
programmes envisaged in various areas of Mechanical Engineering and
Engineering Science, at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. In
particular, his commitment to Engineering research, Development and
Consultancy effort, as well as his professional standing and linkages, in
the areas of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, put him in a position to
propel the take-off and development of the School of Mechanical,
Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (SMMME), along with the
associated Graduate School. His current schedule of responsibilities for
these academic units includes the design of the curriculum and R&D
programmes in Solid Mechanics, Composite Materials, Industrial and
Environmental Fluid Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering Systems and
Robotics.
9. Professor
Olunloyo is also expected to offer assistance in the teaching and
research programmes in some areas of Engineering Science. These include
Systems Science, Software Engineering. Artificial Intelligence and
Non-Linear Dynamics and Complex Systems. In addition, he is also involved
in the development of the Advanced Analysis Centre and the Akwa Ibom
State Space Centre, both of which are key research and development
facilities which are to operate in close collaboration with the
School/Graduate Schools of Engineering.
