LOCATION
Akwa Ibom State University of Technology is
located on a strip of near virgin land lying between Latitudes 4º 30’ and
4 º38’ North of the Equator and between Longitudes 7º 45’ and 7º 52’ East
of the Greenwich Meridian. The approximately 4000 hectares territory is
made up of land acquired from the three Local Government Areas of Mkpat
Enin, Eastern Obolo and Ibeno. The territory, which is named
University Town, can be reached by road from Ikot Akpaden Junction,
which lies on the Eket – Ikot Abasi sector of the East – West Road from
Calabar through Port Harcourt, Warri and Benin to Lagos. It is bounded in
the south by that part of the Atlantic coast called the Bight of Bonny.
The extension of the University territory to the Atlantic coast is
informed by the fact that it will have a School of Naval Architecture and
Ocean Engineering, with a ship building yard and a dry dock.
Besides the host Local Government Areas
mentioned above, the other immediate neighbouring LGAs are Onna, Ikot
Abasi, and Eket. Ikot Abasi, the southwest apex of the triangular Akwa
Ibom Technology Corridor, is the site of Aluminium Smeltimg Plant, the
proposed oil refinery and the Akwa Ibom Independent Power Plant. The
southeast apex of the corridor is Eket where the vast Exxon-Mobil
operational base is located, while the northern apex of the corridor is
at Ntak Inyang in Itu Local Government Area, the site of the Science,
Incubation and Technology Park. The University is, expected to interact
closely with these and other industrial establishments towards the
development of the resources of the State.
ACADEMIC STRUCTURE
The academic structure of the University
features eight Schools and an Institute – The Institute of Management and
General Studies. Of the eight Schools, six are engineering-based. The
work in these nine Academic Units is to be complimented by the research
and development programmes of fifteen research institutes. The
rest deal with Agriculture and Forestry and, Fisheries and Fisheries
Technology.
THE PHILOSOPHY, VISION AND MISSION OF
THE UNIVERSITY
The University is to be guided by the
following philosophy, vision and mission.
(i) Philosophy
The
University is to ensure the production of graduates that are not only
readily employable but capable of generating employment by making use of
the vast natural resources available in the State.
(ii) Vision
This is the
emergence of AKUTECH as an institution devoted to the vigorous pursuit of
productive scientific and technological research and development (R & D)
which is focused to address the socio – economic problems of Akwa Ibom
State, especially the urgent need to transform the State from a Civil
Service orientation to an industrialized status.
(iii) Mission
The mission
of the University is to attain specific objectives which are expressed in
a set of objects specified in its enabling law.
By these objects, the University is,
inter alia, to:
(i) Encourage the advancement of learning
and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex or
political conviction the opportunity of acquiring a first class
technological education;
(ii) Provide
courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of learning
in engineering and technology and to make those facilities available on
proper terms to such persons as are equipped to benefit from them;
(iii) Ensure
that the vision of the University, which is anchored on research and
development, is focused to address the specific problems of the
State;
(iv) Provide
through a productive research and development drive, strong support to
the economic effort of the State, especially in the industrial and
manufacturing sectors of the economy;
(v) Ensure
the development and pursuit of dynamic academic programmes which are
responsive to and influence the industrial trends within the State;
(vi) Develop,
enhance and sustain the international worth and acceptability of the
academic programmes and degrees of the University, through effective
linkages with international academic, research development agencies;
(vii) Relate
its activities to the social, cultural and economic needs of the people
of the State and Nigeria, and
(viii) Undertake
any other activities appropriate for a technological University of the
highest standard.
The above philosophy, vision and mission of
the University essentially require that the University develops such that
its research and development activities exert a strong guiding influence
on graduate studies and undergraduate academic programmes. Its
development is thus from the top downwards. This approach to tertiary
technological education has received international acclaim by which the
planning of the institution has been described as that for a 21st
Century University of Technology which is unique for West Africa.
Overall, AKUTECH, as a University of
Technology, is intended to function as a prime mover of technological and
industrial transformation, not only in the State but also in Nigeria as a
whole.
MOTTO
The motto of the Akwa Ibom State University
of Technology is KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR DEVELOPMENT.
LOGO
The Logo of the Akwa Ibom State University
of Technology comprises:
i. A shield enclosing the ocean, oil rig and a satellite dish with green
vegetation in the background depicting some of the rich natural resource
endowments of Akwa Ibom State
and the aspiration to excel in technology, research and development.
ii.
A white circle surrounding the shield
within the name of the University is inscribed.
iii.
A white ribbon within which the Motto of the University is inscribed.
iv. The wheel of which nine of its cogs are visible represents the
expected industrialization influence of the nine Academic Units on the
Akwa Ibom State economy and society.
COLOURS
The colours of the University are Blue,
Green and Brick. Blue and Green are the colours of the ocean and forests
of Akwa Ibom respectively and also represents fruitfulness and bountiful
prosperity. The Brick represents industry, innovation, excellence and
prominence. |
